The CalWORKs program is funded by the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). Services are designed to reduce Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence issues that create obstacles with welfare recipients’ ability to work. CalWORKs mental health services are designed to stabilize individual or family situations that are a barrier to CalWORKs participants obtaining or maintaining employment. Employment is emphasized as a key component to the CalWORKs program. These services also include: mental health assessment, individual and group therapy, rehabilitation services, case management, outreach and engagement, crisis intervention and medication support. Needed substance abuse and domestic violence services are coordinated with community providers who specialize in the provision of these types of services. All program service elements are targeted toward reducing mental health barriers that prevent CalWORKs participants from working and are designed to assist participants and their families to achieve a more adaptive level of functioning.
